I'm currently trying to disciple a little girl in the precario neighborhood. She is 10 years old and her name is Gerlynn. It has been really hard to get to know her because I don't know what to say or do with her. I don't remember how I was at that age! Her world is totally different from mine, so I'm just trying to mentor her as well as I can! Her home life is kind of rough. Her dad just left their family of 8 and Gerlynn often takes the role as "other mother" because she's the oldest girl and her mom is always working until late into the night.
Well, yesterday was a special day. We had promised Gerlynn and her cousin, Betsy, that we'd take them to the movies in September as a treat. Yesterday, we accomplished that promise and with popcorn and coke and the whole thing!
THEY HAD NEVER GONE TO THE MOVIES BEFORE.
The idea blew my mind. I'm not sure why I was so surprised, but it just caught me off guard. So often, we help families in the Precario with food or items they need, but this is something that brought tears to my eyes.
I was enjoying childhood with girls who will never forget going to the movie for the first time.
When the advertisements came on, they asked me if they were the movie. Not yet, I said. They asked me how many times I had been to the movies. This month?, I wanted to ask them. I shrugged and just said "a lot!" I've been to the movies THOUSANDS of times in my life. Ever since I was able to talk and understand, we would go. I'VE NEVER ONCE THANKED GOD FOR BEING ABLE TO GO TO THE MOVIES. I expect it. In the car, on the way back to drop the girls off, we prayed together. I THANKED GOD for the opportunity to go to the movies with the girls.
It's amazing what 10 and 11 year olds can teach you about giving thanks.
